Discover the art of botanical color through an immersive, hands-on exploration of plants, textiles, and natural materials.

Led by Portland-based artist, ecologist, and natural dyer Elan Hagens, this workshop introduces the art of botanical dyeing through a process that transfers the colors and impressions of plant materials onto silk.
Participants will experiment with botanical forms, textures, and color placement to create their own silk bandana and silk eye cover.

Inspired by the beauty of the natural world, each piece becomes a wearable keepsake—something to enjoy during your time at CASCADA and carry with you into everyday life. Whether worn, wrapped, or used in a quiet moment of rest, these one-of-a-kind textiles hold a small piece of nature and a memory of your experience.

Rooted in ecology, curiosity, and the joy of making, this experience invites you to slow down, explore the unexpected possibilities of natural color, and connect with the living world through textiles. No previous dyeing experience is necessary.

About your Facilitator:

Elan Hagens is a Portland-based artist, ecologist, natural dyer, and outdoor educator whose practice explores the relationships between people, landscapes, and the materials we use to make things. Her work spans botanical color, textiles, fungi, foraging, and traditional and contemporary approaches to working with the natural world.

Through workshops, fieldwork, and creative collaborations, Elan invites people to follow their curiosity, deepen their ecological connections, and discover the stories held within natural materials. Her work has been featured on OPB’s Oregon Field Guide and through collaborations with artists, educators, and outdoor brands.
